3 Tips to Keeping your Online Record Clean

Just a few decades ago, one could say that it would take a significant amount of effort and determination for a kid/teen to do something to severely jeopardize their life. Now, it can take a matter of minutes. In this new generation of super-empowered individuals, everyone seems to think all their thoughts should be published. One quick video posted to YouTube or a rant online and every news outlet, future employer, teacher and perspective college can see it. We can share our thoughts, images, videos and options with more people and faster than ever before.

Here are my Top 3 tips to keeping your online record clean.

1. On the internet there is no difference between public and private.
The internet is not your personal journal. And it should not be treated as such. If you don’t want EVERYONE to see what you have written and posted online

2. Just because you can post something doesn’t mean you should.
You might think it’s super funny and a great inside joke, but the internet doesn’t have inside or outside jokes. Just jokes. And most likely, the joke will eventually be on you. I consider this tip as more of a general life rule.

3. Alter egos should only exist for CIA purposes and in Hollywood movies. If you can’t be yourself online, you probably should reflect on your character traits in real life. Your online persona should be an extension of your thoughts and beliefs, not an extension of your outrageous alter ego.
